Summary

Critically acclaimed author Cat Sebastian makes her trade paperback debut in a stunning historical romance about a reluctantly reformed highwayman and the aristocrat who threatens to steal his heart。

Kit Webb has left his stand-and-deliver days behind him。 But dreary days at his coffee shop have begun to make him pine for the heady rush of thievery。 When a handsome yet arrogant aristocrat storms into his shop, Kit quickly realizes he may be unable to deny whatever this highborn man desires。

In order to save himself and a beloved friend, Percy, Lord Holland must go against every gentlemanly behavior he holds dear to gain what he needs most: a book that once belonged to his mother, a book his father never lets out of his sight and could be Percy’s savior。 More comfortable in silk-filled ballrooms than coffee shops frequented by criminals, his attempts to hire the roughly hewn highwayman, formerly known as Gladhand Jack, proves equal parts frustrating and electrifying。

Kit refuses to participate in the robbery but agrees to teach Percy how to do the deed。 Percy knows he has little choice but to submit and as the lessons in thievery begin, he discovers thievery isn’t the only crime he’s desperate to commit with Kit。

But when their careful plan goes dangerously wrong and shocking revelations threaten to tear them apart, can these stolen hearts withstand the impediments in their path?

I listened to this on audiobook and really enjoyed it。 The narrator did well。 I liked the characters and the storyline。 They continued to grow in complexity and I always appreciate that。 The pacing was a little wonky but other than that, it was a good one。

I’m definitely in a reading slump which contributed to me not finishing this, but it was a slow start for me, and didn’t keep my attention enough to want to keep going。

DNF @ p。 151this wasn't bad, it just wasn't quite what i wanted。 the chapters are too short for my taste; i felt like i was being jerked between kitt and percy without much time to process。 things also still feel very in the dark -- i never felt like i had a clear picture of motivation, particularly for kitt。 we would get name drops and a few hints but no actual details。 generally i don't mind needing to figure things out myself with a few context clues, but it's important to his character devel DNF @ p。 151this wasn't bad, it just wasn't quite what i wanted。 the chapters are too short for my taste; i felt like i was being jerked between kitt and percy without much time to process。 things also still feel very in the dark -- i never felt like i had a clear picture of motivation, particularly for kitt。 we would get name drops and a few hints but no actual details。 generally i don't mind needing to figure things out myself with a few context clues, but it's important to his character development, and i felt unable to hammer his character out all the way。 alas! 。。。more

A copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author/narrator。***Reviewed for Xtreme-Delusions dot com*** 。。。more

3。5, stars rounded up。 I wanted to like this more, but I think it was more of a me issue than a book issue。 I did have some issues with the pacing, and some plot points feeling underdeveloped。 Rounded up to 4 stars because I thought it was really interesting and enjoyed seeing an aristocratic character realize that the aristocracy was bad and struggling with their place in it。

I found this book refreshing but at the same time confusing。I'd a hard time trying to place who was who at the beginning, where there was a lot of name throwing but no explanation。I'm not entirely satisfied with the end, and I think the book was a bit too long for the plot。 The description is not entirely accurate either, it's not much about the robbery but about the two characters who spend a LOT of the book looking at each other with no development whatsoever。I liked the two main characters an I found this book refreshing but at the same time confusing。I'd a hard time trying to place who was who at the beginning, where there was a lot of name throwing but no explanation。I'm not entirely satisfied with the end, and I think the book was a bit too long for the plot。 The description is not entirely accurate either, it's not much about the robbery but about the two characters who spend a LOT of the book looking at each other with no development whatsoever。I liked the two main characters and their banter。 。。。more

Percy and Marion are such amazing and fun characters – although their predicament is anything but fun。 I doubt blackmail can every be considered fun。 The twist and turns in the story kept me listening and wanting to find out just how all the convoluted machinations would turn out。 The peek into the Georgian society and the disdain for which the aristocracy held those who were tenants on their land and complete lack of care for anyone not of their class。 As Kit and Percy grew closer, I just knew there would be a sad story in Kit’s past that would explain why he was happy to help Percy in taking down his father。 Just how that might work out and who all might be affected by their efforts were cleverly revealed at just the right time。 I loved Kit and his friends and Percy, his valet Collins (I bet he has a LOT of stories to tell) and of course Marion and her moxie also made for a deftly realized plot that kept me guessing until the last few chapters。 Honestly, for a book about blackmail and highway robbery with the potential for any one of a number of characters ending up dead, this was a really good time 😀Joel Leslie did a fantastic job narrating this novel。 There are a lot of characters and a lot of accents – which is right in his wheelhouse。 The snark and humor and sadness and pathos all shone through。 Drunk Percy might be my favorite 😉 Kit with his gruff exterior hiding a marshmallow heart was probably my second favorite – but truly the entire cast was terribly well done。 So enjoyable – and I highly recommend it! 。。。more

I was a bit annoyed by the fact that there were answered questions left in the end, but afterward I saw the announcement that there’s a book 2 coming that should explain the gaps。 I can’t wait!

Review posted on Smexy Books。The Queer Principles of Kit Webb was somehow both what I expected and nothing like I expected。 I typically love Cat Sebastian’s books, and I really did enjoy The Queer Principles of Kit Webb, but it had darker themes than I would expect based on my experience with her books in the past。 This doesn’t mean that it isn’t still a sweet romance, but the main storyline is pretty serious - Percy is being blackmailed based on some information about his (pretty evil) father, Review posted on Smexy Books。The Queer Principles of Kit Webb was somehow both what I expected and nothing like I expected。 I typically love Cat Sebastian’s books, and I really did enjoy The Queer Principles of Kit Webb, but it had darker themes than I would expect based on my experience with her books in the past。 This doesn’t mean that it isn’t still a sweet romance, but the main storyline is pretty serious - Percy is being blackmailed based on some information about his (pretty evil) father, and needs to retrieve a book that his father never lets out of his sight。 Obviously the solution is to hold up his carriage, and Percy attempts to hire Kit, a former highwayman, to do that。 But Kit was injured in his last job, over a year ago, and so decides instead of doing the job, he’ll teach Percy how to do the hold up himself。 There’s a lot of sexy “learning to fight” scenes, and Percy hanging around in Kit’s coffee shop making eyes at Kit。 Percy and Kit are delightful, and the first 75% or so of the book is them being very adorable together。 One thing that I typically enjoy about Cat Sebastian books is that I feel like she keeps me guessing as to how the characters can end up together and it’s always very satisfying when the resolution comes about。 The same held true with The Queer Principles - I wasn’t sure how exactly Percy and Kit would make it work, but the way that it ended up happening was so sweet。 There are some plot threads that are left hanging, but I wonder if that is also a set-up for a sequel。 I think my biggest complaint about The Queer Principles is that the secondary characters are clearly important, and as a reader, I kept trying to puzzle out the relationships but kept getting confused。 I felt like I was supposed to be picking up on something, but just kind of felt like it was going over my head。 (Honestly, it’s possible this is a me problem and everybody else who reads this book will be fine。) Eventually all is revealed, but I do think there are some very convenient relationships, because some things just work out perfectly。 Percy is a bit of a spoiled aristocrat, not having known anything else in his life。 But he grows up a lot during the course of the book。 Kit is grumpy but just can’t maintain his grump in the face of Percy’s sheer ridiculousness。 Kit’s history is entangled with Percy’s family in a very serious way, and the way that is resolved is well done。 The love the two have for each other by the end is very clear, and their interactions are so tender and sweet and gave me warm fuzzies inside as I was reading。 Overall, I just felt so good after reading The Queer Principles of Kit Webb。 It is such a satisfying read。 Though it is dark at times, I feel like those parts are handled well and I was very emotionally satisfied at the end。 Content warnings: Before the events of the book, death of a child and wife, as well as death of a mother。 During the events of the book, blackmail and gun violence。 Author’s content notes 。。。more

For a book with a lot of promise, this one both stood and delivered。 It was fun and silly and light—not so much in topic as in how it handled it。 It wasn't interested in interrogating economic philosophies; merely in bringing up the somewhat obvious ones that tend to get overlooked in this genre (yes, ALL lords, especially landlords) and offering its protagonist relatively easy answers while still maintaining the experience of quiet joy in its exploration of, to borrow a line from Into the Woods For a book with a lot of promise, this one both stood and delivered。 It was fun and silly and light—not so much in topic as in how it handled it。 It wasn't interested in interrogating economic philosophies; merely in bringing up the somewhat obvious ones that tend to get overlooked in this genre (yes, ALL lords, especially landlords) and offering its protagonist relatively easy answers while still maintaining the experience of quiet joy in its exploration of, to borrow a line from Into the Woods, how "nice is different than good"。 But the point is not to investigate the layers of complicitness, the point (as it so often is with romance novels) is to offer an acceptable—which in this case would mean ethical enough—escape from the question。And that is the joy of the book in the end。Also, shoutout to Sebastian for having her characters apologize for hurting each other within a reasonable time frame and like adults instead of making a mountain out of molehill。 。。。more

I read a lot of historical romance but very few that feature LGBTQIA+ representation so I was really excited to read The Queer Principles of Kit Webb 。 I enjoyed this book。 The characters were well-developed and interesting。 I liked the alternating points of view。 I always like romances that pair two people from different walks of life, which is the case here with the highwayman and the aristocrat。 It allows for some growth in the characters and challenges some preconceived notions they have。It I read a lot of historical romance but very few that feature LGBTQIA+ representation so I was really excited to read The Queer Principles of Kit Webb 。 I enjoyed this book。 The characters were well-developed and interesting。 I liked the alternating points of view。 I always like romances that pair two people from different walks of life, which is the case here with the highwayman and the aristocrat。 It allows for some growth in the characters and challenges some preconceived notions they have。It was a bit of a slow start but that made the romance feel more natural and less rushed。 Kit and Percy have a really fun banter between them that was enjoyable to read。 There’s definitely some steam as well as really sweet moments。 All in all, this was a unique and interesting book! 。。。more

B+ Slow burn Georgian m/m historical romance with lots of bantering and smoldering over coffee, sword play and scheming。 Not my favorite by this author but I'm not sure I can explain why, at least not yet。I've been reading Cat Sebastian since her first Avon romance and I'm glad for her that this is her trade paperback debut。 But I wish they'd given it a better cover! Historical fiction is not a genre I read a lot of, but I can't pass up a queer historical fiction with an illustrated cover as beautiful as this one。I loved the setup for this with the son of a Duke and the highwayman and just the entire main plot。 There were a couple of predictable things and a couple of unpredictable things, but as a whole this was a really fun book。 It's fairly low angst even though there is some very serious moments in events。I don't know if it was intended or not, but Kit W Historical fiction is not a genre I read a lot of, but I can't pass up a queer historical fiction with an illustrated cover as beautiful as this one。I loved the setup for this with the son of a Duke and the highwayman and just the entire main plot。 There were a couple of predictable things and a couple of unpredictable things, but as a whole this was a really fun book。 It's fairly low angst even though there is some very serious moments in events。I don't know if it was intended or not, but Kit Webb is demisexual and you can fight me on it because I will believe that forever。 There's a specific quote where he talks about not being interested in sex until he's got a connection with people and how he never really thought sex was worth it unless he really knew the person。 He is most likely pan-romantic but being a historical fiction and there's not actual labels。 I did appreciate the discussion though about attraction that was so casually and wonderfully done。Percy though was hilarious and I loved all of his chapters。 Especially his fighting scenes and the training scenes cracked me up。 The banter between Percy and Kit was perfect。 Also, Betty deserves all the awards for keeping kit in line and biting back at his sarcasm and not taking his shit。 She was a great secondary character。I almost wish for a little bit more closure in the end, and I'm not sure if this is set up to be a series or not, but everything wrapped itself up quite nicely while also leaving a few glaring plot holes。Rep: disabled panromantic demisexual MC, gay MC, use of a mobility aid。 。。。more
